Marvel Tōkon vs Marvel Rivals

Both are Marvel team games. They are not the same genre, and that is the whole answer.

Why these two get compared

This is the most confused pairing in Marvel gaming right now, and the confusion is understandable: two Marvel titles, both built around teams of heroes, both with big rosters and flashy ultimates, both talked about in the same breath.

But they are different kinds of game. Marvel Rivals is a team-based hero shooter — third-person, objective-based, six players a side. Marvel Tōkon is a 2D fighting game — one opponent, a health bar each, executed inputs. Someone who wants one will usually not want the other, and the roster overlap is coincidence rather than competition.

The honest bottom line

If you want a fighting game — inputs, combos, one-on-one — that is Tōkon, and it is not out yet. If you want a shooter you can play with five friends tonight, that is Rivals. They are not substitutes for each other, and we are not going to tell you one is better than the other when they are not trying to do the same thing.

Common questions

Which is better, Marvel Tōkon or Marvel Rivals?
We are not answering that. Marvel Tōkon releases August 6, 2026 and nobody outside the studio has played the retail build, so a head-to-head verdict written today would be invented. The table on this page compares what is documented instead.
Is Marvel Tōkon the same kind of game as Marvel Rivals?
No. Marvel Tōkon is a 2D tag fighting game; Marvel Rivals is a different genre entirely. See the specification table for the breakdown.
