Marvel Tōkon: frequently asked questions

The questions people actually search for, answered from primary sources. Where something has not been confirmed, the answer says so rather than filling the gap.

When does MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls come out?
August 6, 2026, on PS5 and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). Release date & countdown
How does Marvel Tōkon compare to 2XKO?
They're both tag fighters built for a modern audience, and both offer simplified inputs — but the team sizes differ: Tōkon is 4v4 with three assists behind your point character, while 2XKO is 2v2. Tōkon is a paid $59.99 release on PS5 and PC from Arc System Works; 2XKO is Riot's free-to-play title. Beyond format and business model we're not going to rank them for you — with Tōkon out since August 6 you can try its 4v4 tag game yourself, and which one you prefer is a matter of taste rather than something we'll decide for you.
How does it compare to Invincible VS?
They get compared because both are comic-licensed tag fighters in development for the same window. What we can state about Tōkon is documented: Arc System Works, 4v4, PS5 and PC, released August 6, 2026, $59.99. We're not going to characterise Invincible VS's mechanics or rank the two here — it isn't our game to document, and a head-to-head verdict is a matter of taste we'd rather leave to you.
Is Marvel Tōkon free to play?
No. It's a full-priced game: $59.99 (Standard), $84.99 (Digital Deluxe), or $99.99 (Ultimate). The Year 1 Character & Stage Pass is included in BOTH Deluxe and Ultimate. The July open beta was free, which is where some of the confusion comes from. Editions & pre-order
What platforms is it on? Is it coming to Xbox or Switch?
PS5 and PC only. It is not on Xbox or Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, and no version for those platforms has been announced — it's published by PlayStation Publishing. Full platform breakdown
Does it have crossplay?
The Steam listing carries the Cross-Platform Multiplayer category, so PS5 and PC players can be matched together. No official statement breaks down which modes that covers, so we do not claim "full crossplay from day one" the way most coverage does. Crossplay details
How many characters are there?
20 at launch, organized into five teams of four: Unbreakable X-Men, Amazing Guardians, Fighting Avengers, Knights of Doom, and Samurai Outriders. Four more characters arrive post-launch via the Year 1 Pass. Full roster
What does "Tōkon" mean?
Tōkon (闘魂) is Japanese for "fighting spirit" — a word with deep roots in Japanese martial arts and pro wrestling. So the title effectively reads "Marvel Fighting Spirit: Fighting Souls."
Who is developing it?
Arc System Works — the studio behind Guilty Gear Strive, BlazBlue and Dragon Ball FighterZ — with PlayStation Publishing as publisher.
Is there a story mode?
Yes. The single-player Episode Mode teaches team dynamics and carries the game's story. Steam also lists local shared/split-screen versus, so you can play offline against a friend.
Was there a beta, and will there be another?
An open beta ran July 24–26, 2026 on PS5 and PC with 16 of the 20 launch characters playable (Green Goblin joined as a surprise addition) — no beta code or registration was needed, though every player needed an internet connection and an Account for PlayStation, on PC as well as PS5. No further beta has been announced before the August 6 release. Open beta guide
What are the PC system requirements?
Steam's listed minimum is Windows 11, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, 16 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA RTX 2060 6GB or AMD RX 6600 XT 8GB, and 27 GB of storage. No SSD or NVMe requirement is listed. System requirements
Who are the DLC characters?
One of four is confirmed: Phoenix Cyclops (the Phoenix Five incarnation of Cyclops), revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2026 and arriving Fall 2026 as the first Year 1 pass character, voiced by Ray Chase. The other three characters and the bonus stage were teased but remain unnamed. Phoenix Cyclops details
Is it a 3v3 like Marvel vs. Capcom?
No — it's 4v4. You control one point character while three teammates provide assists, with a tag system for switching. It's Arc System Works' own take on the tag formula, not an MvC clone. The five launch teams
