Assemble Counter vs Crossover — the two defensive team tools
Both are the same two-button press. Whether you are holding guard decides which one comes out — and they do completely different things.
Assemble Counter — not guarding
Pressing the two-button combination while you are NOT guarding makes your character perform a defensive backstep. If the opponent attacks during it, you automatically launch a counterattack.
It is a read, not a reversal: it rewards you for expecting an attack rather than for reacting to one that already connected.
Crossover — while guarding
The same input WHILE guarding calls a teammate in to interrupt the opponent's attack, creating an opening for a counteroffensive.
This is the team version of a pushblock or alpha counter: it spends your team's presence to buy space out of pressure.
Why sharing one input matters
Because guard state decides the outcome, you cannot pick between them under pressure by choosing a different button — you pick by choosing whether to block first.
In practice that means a defensive habit determines which tool you get. Players who block on reflex will mostly see Crossover; players who backdash will mostly see Assemble Counter.
