The Assemble button, the three assist types, and how holding a direction decides which teammate comes in. This is the system most new players fight with for the first hour.

Calling an assist

Pressing the Assemble button calls a teammate in for an Assemble Assist attack. That is the whole basic interaction, and it is why the button exists on its own rather than being a shoulder-button shortcut.

Assists come in distinct types — shooter, vertical, and assault. They can be called from neutral without spending Assemble gauge, which means they are not a resource you have to hoard; they are part of your normal offence.

Choosing WHO comes in

This is the part that gets missed. Hold a direction with the tag button and it selects the teammate: neutral or forward brings in your second, down brings in your third, back brings in your fourth.

During the beta a recurring complaint was that calling an assist felt clunky or unpredictable. In a squad of four with a directional selector, pressing the button without a direction gets you the same teammate every time — which reads as the game ignoring you.
