Open beta: playable10 documented movesAugust 6, 2026

Summary

Limbo's sorceress brings portal mixups to the X-Men.

Magik relocates. Reveal coverage centers her stepping discs, portals that move her around the opponent and turn ordinary knockdowns into left-right guesses. Backed by three assists, that threat compounds.

Illyana Rasputina rules the demon dimension Limbo, carries the Soulsword, and is Colossus's younger sister. The sorcery-and-steel identity fits Arc System Works' animation style unusually well. She was beta-playable; treat any tier talk as weekend impressions until the launch build gets labbed properly.

Inputs use numpad notation for a character facing right: 2 is down, 6 is forward, so 236 is a quarter-circle forward and 623 a “dragon punch” motion; L/M/H are the three attack strengths and U is the Unique button. The game also has simplified one-button skills — the controls guide covers both.

Startup, active, recovery and on-block values need the retail build to measure and land here after August 6, 2026. Invented frame data is worse than none.

How to play Magik

Everything Magik does is built on Dark Portal. She drops a stepping-disc portal, then Teleport warps her to it and Teleport Slash turns that relocation straight into an attack — so her offense is a positioning game, not a straight-ahead rushdown. The reader's mental model should be place, warp, hit, not poke, poke, poke.

Her Skills fill in the space around that. Demon Fire and Demon Flame give her a fireball and a ground pillar to control the screen and set up a portal approach; Rising Soul is her upward option; Soulsword Slice is the close-range multi-hit. Most of her specials cost 25 gauge on the Heavy version, so her setplay is gauge-hungry — you are constantly deciding whether a portal mixup is worth the meter.

Darkchild is the payoff. Her Ultimate spends 100-150 gauge to transform into an empowered state where her attacks hit harder and — the part that changes how you spend meter — Soulsword Sacrifice becomes free to use. So there is a real install-and-cash-in rhythm to her: build meter with portal pressure, drop Darkchild, then spend freely while it lasts and cap with Queen of Limbo.

One thing our own beta data says out loud: Magik was the single most-picked fighter in the Vibranium+ open beta (200 picks) — but 132 of those were as an assist, only 68 as the point character. So even the players who loved her mostly did not lead with her. If you are building a team, that is the honest read: her portal tools and Soulsword assist were valued as backup at least as much as a solo carry. Whether that holds once the launch build is labbed is still an open question — treat it as a strong beta signal, not a settled verdict.

Kit-level gameplan from Magik’s documented moves and the open-beta usage split — not frame data. Specific frame advantages and matchup reads land once the retail build is tested.

On the Vibranium and above leaderboard, Magik was picked 200 times across 1,600 character slots — the most-picked fighter.

Total picks200
As point fighter68
As assist132

Players overwhelmingly used Magik as an assist — 66% of picks — rather than as the fighter they started the match with. Compare every fighter’s beta pick rate.

By raw picks, Magik landed just ahead of Blade.

Popularity is not strength — this counts what people chose over one three-day weekend on a pre-launch build, not what wins.
