Summary

Element guns and jet boots — the Guardians' ranged threat.

Star-Lord shoots and leaves. Element guns supply the projectiles, jet boots supply the exit, and together they make him the Amazing Guardians' ranged specialist.

Characters who can shoot while repositioning tend to dictate a match's pace. How his projectiles interact with the assist system is the launch question; beta impressions exist, but weekend balance rarely survives contact with a launch patch.

Inputs use numpad notation for a character facing right: 2 is down, 6 is forward, so 236 is a quarter-circle forward and 623 a “dragon punch” motion; L/M/H are the three attack strengths and U is the Unique button. The game also has simplified one-button skills — the controls guide covers both.

Startup, active, recovery and on-block values need the retail build to measure and land here after August 6, 2026. Invented frame data is worse than none.

How to play Star-Lord

Star-Lord is gun zoning built on a four-element loadout. Groove Switch reloads and rotates between Lightning, Fire, Ice and Earth, and Element Blast spends a loaded shot in whichever element is up — so his zoning is a resource-management game, not one projectile mashed. You are always deciding what to have chambered for the next exchange.

The four elements each do a different job: Lightning is a straight beam, Fire is a multi-hit, Ice freezes on hit, and Earth blocks incoming projectiles while it blasts. On top of that he has genuine air mobility — Multi-Dash and Free Flight — to reposition after a shot, with Blaster Shot and Gravity Mine covering the ground.

There is no install; his ceiling is in juggling elements and using Free Flight to stay at the range he wants while you struggle to get in. Dance Off, his Ultimate, grants bonus Element Blast shots afterward, which feeds straight back into the loadout loop.

In the open beta he drew 66 picks, split 11 on point and 55 as an assist — roughly 83% assist. That is a textbook zoner's split: players valued his element shots as a backup toolbox to bolt onto someone else far more than as the character they started the round with.

Kit-level gameplan from Star-Lord’s documented moves and the open-beta usage split — not frame data. Specific frame advantages and matchup reads land once the retail build is tested.

On the Vibranium and above leaderboard, Star-Lord was picked 66 times across 1,600 character slots — 12th most-picked of the 16 playable.

Total picks66
As point fighter11
As assist55

Players overwhelmingly used Star-Lord as an assist — 83% of picks — rather than as the fighter they started the match with. Compare every fighter’s beta pick rate.

By raw picks, Star-Lord landed just ahead of Peni Parker and just behind Green Goblin.

Popularity is not strength — this counts what people chose over one three-day weekend on a pre-launch build, not what wins.
